Starting is simpler than you think

You don’t need to have it all figured out.

Start with what feels most important today.

1
Start with what’s on your mind

What’s been weighing on you? Anxiety, grief, a relationship, a big change? You don’t need the right words, just a place to begin.

2
Browse counsellors who seem to fit

Use the search to refine by location, concern, therapist type, and therapy approach. Every profile offers what you need to make an informed choice.

3
Reach out directly

Contact one or more counsellors. Some offer a free consultation, so you can ask questions and get a sense of whether the fit feels right.

4
Take the first step

Book your first session with someone who feels right for you. Therapy is a process, and finding the right connection is part of it. It’s okay if the first person is not the right fit.

Frequently asked questions

There's no checklist you have to pass to "qualify" for counselling, if you're noticing ongoing stress, anxiety, low mood, relationship tension, grief, or just a sense of feeling stuck, that's already a good enough reason to explore support. A free, no-obligation consultation call is a gentle, pressure-free way to test the waters; you can ask questions and decide afterward, with no strings attached, whether it feels right to continue.

No, you never need a diagnosis or a "serious enough" reason to start counselling. Feeling overwhelmed, going through a rough patch, or simply wanting to understand yourself better is more than reason enough.

Feeling nervous before your first session is extremely common, most people do, and your therapist expects it. You don't need a polished story or the "right" words. Your therapist will gently guide the conversation, and it's completely fine to start with something as simple as, "I'm not sure where to begin, but I know I need some support." That alone is enough to start.

A good fit means you connect with your counsellor and feel heard, respected, and safe. A therapist that has experience with the issues you want to work on is also important. Start by filtering for location, concern, approach, and availability, then trust yourself as you read profiles. And remember, there's no pressure to get it perfect on the first try, you're always free to look further.

It's completely okay if the first person you see doesn't feel like the right fit, that can happen, and it's not something you need to justify. You're never obligated to continue with a therapist. You can raise your concerns with them directly, ask for a referral, or simply try someone new, feeling safe and understood is essential to therapy actually working, so switching is a sign of self-advocacy, not failure.

Yes, what you share in counselling is private. Therapists are bound by strict professional ethics and privacy laws to protect your information. The only exceptions are rare and specific, such as a serious risk of harm to yourself or someone else, or situations involving abuse, and even then, your therapist will always be upfront about their confidentiality policy in your first session and welcome any questions you have, so there are no surprises.

It's completely okay to factor cost into your decision, money worries shouldn't stop you from getting support. Fees vary by therapist, and most list their rates directly on their profile so there are no surprises before you book. Many also offer sliding-scale pricing, reduced-fee spots, or shorter-term formats, so don't hesitate to ask a therapist directly about affordable options, it's a normal, welcome question.

Your safety comes first. If you're in immediate danger or crisis right now, please reach out to emergency services (911) or a crisis line such as the BC Crisis Line at 1-800-784-2433, they're available 24/7 and are the right support for urgent situations. Counselling is here for you once you're safe, and reaching out to a therapist afterward can be an important part of healing, we'll be here when you're ready.
