Valerie Whiffen received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Simon Fraser University. For twenty years she was a researcher and professor, first at the University of Western Ontario then at the University of Ottawa. During this time, she taught graduate courses, supervised the clinical training of students, and ran the clinic where this training is provided. In her private practice, she treated individuals for depression and couples for marital distress.

Dr. Whiffen is the author of more than fifty books, chapters, and research papers. Recently, she published a book about her research and clinical work which is called A Secret Sadness: The Hidden Relationship Patterns that make Women Depressed. In 2007 she returned to British Columbia where she is registered as a Clinical Psychologist (#1764). Her practice focuses on the treatment of depression, postpartum depression, low self-esteem, interpersonal stress and marital problems. She treats individuals using interpersonal therapy and couples using emotion focused therapy at her offices in West Vancouver and on the Sunshine Coast.
