Sarah Topham, M.A. (Counselling Psychology) is a Registered Clinical Counsellor, based in downtown Vancouver, who focusses on addictions and related issues. Sarah offers a safe, comfortable, respectful environment that speaks to the strengths of the client.

Stopping addictive behaviors is difficult. Moving out of addiction, through abstinence and into recovery, does not happen by accident. It requires persistence and action. Because the strongest factor in success is a solid relationship with an experienced therapist, Sarah begins with a no-charge preliminary session.

There are many reasons for addiction. Sarah uses both psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral therapies, depending on which is the best fit. Her work experience in the field of addictions and mental health issues includes a detox facility, a community agency, a men's residential addictions treatment program (a rehab), and most recently, a legally mandated day program for drug offenders (the Drug Court program). As a private practice therapist, she has worked with clients dealing with many issues, but her main interest and experience is in addictions counselling.

Sarah has had extensive experience in treating trauma, often called post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and uses Eye Movememtn Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) or Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR) in treatment. Hypnosis is an option with some issues, such as nicotine addiction or chronic pain. Sarah is Justice Institute certified in Critical Incident Stress Debriefing. Sarah is familiar with twelve-step programs such as AA, NA, CA, and GA, and will work with clients in these programs. Her fifteen years of counselling came after a fifteen year career as a geologist. Both in geology and in counselling, she has work extensively with men.
