Individual Psychotherapy
Clients seeking psychotherapy present with a broad range of symptoms: anxiety, panic attacks, depression, PTSD, sleep difficulty, relationship problems, serious health issues, chronic pain, low self esteem, alcohol or drug abuse, migraines, digestive problems, eating disorders, etc. As diverse as this list may appear, these symptoms share one commonality: they are all signs of dysregulation.
What causes dysregulation? It is caused by a major event or often a series of events that overwhelm the nervous system. Overwhelming events can include developmental derailments (including illness, neglect, abandonment, abuse), sexual abuse or assault, motor vehicle accidents, falls, medical or dental procedures, major illness, near drowning, relationship trauma, death of loved ones, workplace challenges, to name a few.
In the therapeutic process, Brenda uses gentle noncathartic mind/body interventions aimed at diminishing uncomfortable or distressing symptoms by restoring balance to the nervous system. Her primary approach, known as Self Regulation Therapy, was developed by Drs. Lynne Zettl and Ed Josephs and is grounded in neurobiology and psychophysiology research.
Relationship Counselling
By the time most couples find themselves feeling disillusioned with their relationship, they have well entrenched patterns - destructive words and behaviors, accusations, withdrawal, defensiveness, etc. – that undermine their deep longing to feel secure and connected with one another.
Brenda’s aim is to help couples identify their damaging “dance” and how their behaviors escalate that dance. She helps each person explore his/her inner world and how that inner world experience is expressed in the relationship. New insight, along with willingness to risk, creates a possibility for couples to move beyond disharmony into connecting with openness, curiosity and compassion. Brenda’s approach in couples therapy is a blending of Emotionally Focused Therapy, Relational Recovery Therapy and mindfulness philosophy and practices.
