Additional Information about this counsellor or psychologist:
Dr. Nechia DeKryger is taking a 6 month maternity leave from April through September, 2012. New clients will be accepted for October appointments.
Dr. Nechia DeKryger is a registered psychologist who provides assessment and treatment services to adults, adolescents, and children experiencing anxiety, stress, and mood disorders. She primarily practices Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a skills-based approach that has been found to be effective in the treatment of anxiety and mood disorders. These include obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety, health anxiety, specific phobias, and depression. In addition, she is working with several clients in the area of anger management, providing training in ways to better understand and manage difficult emotions.
She also conducts independent medical legal evaluations for children, adolescents, and adults who may have psychological injuries following a motor vehicle accident or personal injury.
Dr. DeKryger’s experience with children and adolescents, helping them learn skills to better manage their anxiety, stems directly from her Ph.D. work in childhood perfectionism. Her work with children often draws upon parental input to both set out and implement the appropriate treatment program. Therapy can empower both parents and children to actively face fears and learn new, more adaptive ways, of relating to each other and the world. In this context, children learn skills that remain useful throughout their life. If you are interested in an active, goal-directed treatment to help you or your child manage worries, fears, or anxious behaviors more effectively, then cognitive behavioral therapy may be right for you.
Dr. DeKryger received her doctoral degree from the University of Louisville (Kentucky, USA) and completed a year-long fulltime pre-doctoral residency in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy through Vancouver Coastal Health Authority. During her residency, she received specialized training in the delivery of empirically supported treatments for anxiety disorders at the Anxiety Disorders Clinic at the University of British Columbia. She also completed clinical training rotations at the Eating Disorders Program at St. Paul’s Hospital and in inpatient psychiatry at Vancouver General Hospital. She has received clinical training in Anxiety Disorder Clinics in both the US and Canada.
Dr. DeKryger’s research interests and experience include the measurement, nature, and development of perfectionism in children, the evaluation of evidence-based treatments for anxiety disorders, and family accommodation in obsessive-compulsive disorder. She has published in the area of anxiety disorders and has presented her research at numerous international conferences. She also continues to provide workshops in the area of anxiety.
